Earthy brews, tunes, and crews will be in abundance at the 13th annual SweetWater 420 Fest taking place on April 21-23 at Centennial Olympic Park
Atlanta’s music industry has been blessed with an infinite supply of different genres and scenes, so there’s no doubt that almost anything (from funk to experimental to hip-hop) is alive and well somewhere in the ATL.
We’ve rounded up six of our favorite close-to-home jambands playing at this weekend-long event. Each one makes waves with their smooth transitional beats, diverse instrumentals, stellar vocals and truly funky breakdowns. While some are conditioned for these sets, most of the bands are making their festival debuts including Atlanta-native bands Andy Bruh, Hedonistas, Voodoo Visionary, and Hiku.
Attendees can expect the entire 420 experience to be complete with SweetWater beer stands, a food village, and an artist market supplied with local businesses. For 2017, clean vibes and dope memories will be supplied from all of the eco-friendly advocates and initiators.
SweetWater Brew spokesperson Tucker Berta Sarkisian told us, “SweetWater shows our love for Atlanta by giving back to organizations who make our city better – Chattahoochee Riverkeepers (through our Save Our Water campaign, which has donated over a million to clean water projects), The Giving Kitchen (through our Second Helping beneficial brew, which donates 100% of profits back to the organization), and countless community initiatives. And, by throwing kick ass parties like 420 Fest!”
Since it’s no secret that our city has a hunger for authentic and soulful delights, the 13th annual SweetWater 420 fest will undoubtedly deliver all kinds of goodness and #keepATLfunky.
CBDB 3:45-5 p.m. Lyrics & Laughter Stage
Alabama-area CBDB has been revolutionizing feel-good music with their heartfelt lyrics and tasteful composition in the name of rock, funk and soul. Properly coined “Joyfunk,” every song they play seems to come straight from the band members’ essence. Cy Simonton (vocals & guitar), Kris Gottlieb (lead guitar), Glenn Dillard (saxophone & keyboards), Paul Oliver (drums), and Mike Sinopole (bass) produce effortless flows with seamless riffs, crushing notes, and a killer stage presence.
Andy Bruh 4-4:45 p.m. 420 Disco Stage
Athens-raised Andy Herrington isn’t just another hype EDM artist. Dub, glitch-hop, and hip-hop breaks mix together for fast-paced tracks with scores of drops and buildups. Andy Bruh’s music slightly reminds us of Mario Kart’s Rainbow Road track; You can practically see all the colorful light flares —but Andy Bruh is way more dirty. Shuffling will be sure to ensue.
Hedonistas noon- 12:30 p.m. Lyrics & Laughter Stage
A couple of weeks ago, Hedonistas showcased their newest member to the Atlanta music scene at 529. With the pack completed, Max Blount (guitar), Peter Brazeal (guitar), Sawyer Drummond (drums), Jake Keeble (vocalist) and Hunter Tredway (bass) make way for an immeasurable set full of jazzy melodies, honey-smooth vocals, and a top-notch delivery of their creations. These Georgia boys are bound to make us proud.
Voodoo Visionary 1:15-1: 55 p.m. Lyrics & Laughter Stage
It’s hard not to get excited about this truly “psychofunk” jam-band. Every show is packed with swooning crowds and 420 is sure to be no different. Fun fact: Voodoo Visionary is known to improvise their funk dance music. Dennis Dowd (keys), Jimmy Lynch (bass), Scott MacDonald (vocals), Mac Schmitz (drums), and Mike Wilson (guitar) are expected to be in attendance this year, but you never know what additions they might bring to the stage including Jose Rivera (percussion), Martin Anderson (saxophone), and Ben Otieno (trumpet).
Hiku 2:15-3:15 p.m. 420 Disco Stage
Hiku supplies trance feels with their fusing of upbeat mixes and hypnotizing voice-tracks. Created by the collaboration between Tyler Kumpee (TYKU) and Niles Roberts (Higher Learning), Hiku boasts over 25,000 plays for their single R O L L on their Soundcloud. The 420 Disco Stage is a damn good home for their blended styles of artistry and entertainment.
Funk You 12:45-2 p.m. Lyrics & Laughter Stage
Expect groovy attire and attitudes from this Augusta-area band consisting of Will Clark (drums), Will Foster (keys), Gavin Hamilton (vox and percussion), Evan Miller (guitar), Palmer Owens (percussion), and Rob Thompson (bass). Creating a legendary ensemble, Funk You provides high-energy musical styles driven by their composition, lyrics, and performances. Funk You is a frequent visitor at Terminal West in West Midtown, but that doesn’t make their presence on the lineup any less special.
Peace and love, y’all!
