Yep, you read that right – Voodoo Visionary will be opening for Karl Denson’s Tiny Univer featuring Jimmy Herring this Saturday (12/3) at Terminal West’s sold out show.
One of the highlights of the 2015 New Orleans Jazz Fest season came on May 1, when Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe welcomed Widespread Panic guitarist Jimmy Herring to jam with them at Tipitina’s. The pairing was amazing and won raves from many. Thankfully, it won’t be the final time the funk band and iconic guitarist share the stage.
Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe have announced a four-show run with Jimmy Herring scheduled for November 30 – December 3. The mini-tour started at the Georgia Theatre in Athens on November 30. From there, KDTU & Jimmy Herring played the New Mountain Theatre in Asheville on December 1, the Neighborhood Theatre in Charlotte on December 2 and then finish down at Terminal West in Atlanta tomorrow.
And who better to open up for this funky mf in ATL than Voodoo Visionary?! These Hometown Heroes of funk have been lighting up venues around town since 2013 and have been skyrocketing up through the scene this past year. They are hot off their last local show opening for TAUK at Variety Playhouse, and if you were there you know they will be bringing the heat on Saturday as well. It has been a pleasure to watch this troupe elevate themselves these past few years and I believe it is only up from here.
For those of yall who are not so familiar with the Voodoo Krewe here is a little tidbit:
Their improvisational funk dance music delicately balances a tight rhythm section featuring deep grooving bass and funky drum beats with diverse and dexterous keys and masterful guitar licks to create a sound the group calls psychofunk. Influenced by a wide array of artists such as Parliament-Funkadelic, the Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, and Medeski Martin and Wood, Voodoo Visionary has a uniquely blended sound that’s guaranteed to put the ‘oogie in yo boogie.
The band is made up of Dennis Dowd (keys), Jimmy Lynch (bass), Scott MacDonald (vocals), Mac Schmitz (drums), and Mike Wilson (guitar). Wilson, Schmitz and Lynch have been playing together for over 8 years, during which time they built a unique chemistry that allows for exceptional improvisation during live shows. MacDonald joined the group in July 2013 as the lead vocalist and Voodoo Visionary began writing new music and playing shows immediately. Dowd was added to the band in March 2014 providing a missing link that enhanced the band’s distinctive sound, and the group has since taken off around the Atlanta music scene.
For all you Dirty South WSMFP fans, Jimmy Herring needs no introduction, but Karl might. Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe is back in action with an extensive tour this Winter. The run of shows—being dubbed “Running With The Diesel”—will give fans from the Southeast, Midwest and West Coast the chance to experience what is highly regarded as one of the best live bands on the planet. Karl, who now serves as saxophonist in The Rolling Stones, is fresh off a tour with the legendary rock band that included the highest grossing concert festival of all time, Desert Trip in Indio, CA.
KDTU will be showcasing material from their forthcoming studio album, due in early 2017, as well as previous KDTU recordings like ‘New Ammo’ and ‘Brother’s Keeper.’ Audiences can also expect a handful of KDTU’s super-charged covers by the likes of Prince, The White Stripes and Beastie Boys. Special guests on select dates will include Jimmy Herring of Widespread Panic who will play as part of the band in Athens, Asheville, Charlotte and Atlanta and Austin-based, Latin-funk purveyors, Brownout who will open shows in Kalamazoo, Chicago and St. Louis.
The current KDTU touring lineup is comprised of Richmond guitarist DJ Williams, Soulive drummer Alan Evans, Greyboy Allstars’ bassist Chris Stillwell, Crush Effects’ keyboardist David Veith, Seattle trumpeter Chris Littlefield and ace slide and lap steel guitarist Seth Freeman.
